“The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. The cube was released internationally in 1980 and became one of the most recognized icons in popular culture.” – Wikipedia. I love how many times the Rubik’s Cubes appears in Movies.
I remember the first time I picked up a Rubk’s Cube. As a kid I was only ever able to solve one side. Anytime I tried to solve a second side I’d mess up the first. it wasn’t until my late 40s when I finally decided to figure out how to solve the rubik’s cube.
My Cube Notation Terminology
When you’re learning how to turn the cube, you need to learn the terminology to describe what side/face of the cube you need to turn in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
You then need to memorize sequences of these moves (algorithms) to solve color patterns you’ll find on a side.
The counterclockwise turns are referred to as “prime.” For example, turning the right clockwise is R. Turning it counterclockwise is R Prime.

I found it hard to memorize the algorithms using the “Prime” word for counterclockwise. So, I came up with my own term, “Ug,” to refer to counterclockwise turns. Consider the algorithm written below using my terminology in green vs the one in blue using the term “Prime.”
Maybe you’ll also find it easier to remember the algorithm by replacing the word “Prime” with “Ug.” It certainly helped me and I hope this or something you come up with yourself works for you 😊.
